Only Two Kingdoms Pt One: The Domain of Darkness

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14).

We are in the middle of a Great War. It is a war that is largely invisible. It is a spiritual war, fought with spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10-20).

Within this war there are two kingdoms. Actually, in all the universe there are only two kingdoms. Though there are so many countries in the world and history has seen many kingdoms come and go, there are really only two kingdoms. Each one of us belongs in one or the other of these kingdoms. There is no middle ground.

Colossians 1:13-14 tells us that there is the domain of darkness and the kingdom of the Beloved Son. That’s it. Only two kingdoms. No middle ground. To which kingdom do you belong?

In the following posts we will examine the two kingdoms and the citizens in each kingdom. Then we will see what God has done to deliver His worshipers from the domain of darkness and transfer them to the Kingdom of the Son.

The Domain of Darkness

Every kingdom has a ruler, and the domain of darkness is no exception. The Bible is very clear that Satan is the ruler of this domain. 2 Corinthians 4:4 tells us that Satan is the god of this world. So, Satan is the one worshiped in this domain of darkness, and he is a cruel god. “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4). He blinds his citizens to keep them from seeing the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ. He blinds them to keep them trapped in their destruction.

Ephesians 2:1-3 says that Satan is the prince of the power of the air. He is the spirit working in the sons characterized by disobedience. He is the one running the world system that is opposed to the One and Only True God of the Bible. All who are outside of the Kingdom of the Beloved Son are following the course of this world system, which is actually Satan’s system. All religions others than true Christianity are following Satan. They are blinded by Satan, happily in rebellion against God, worshiping their god, Satan. He is leading them blindly into everlasting torment in hell.

Every kingdom has citizens. As stated above, the domain of darkness has citizens as well. Who are they?

We all are born into this citizenship. Psalm 51:5 says that we were conceived in sin. This verse speaks to the reality of a sin nature. We are all sinners in our nature, conceived in this condemnation. We are not sinners because we have committed sin. We sin, because we are sinners by nature. This is because the first man Adam sinned, and now all of his descendants, except the Lord Jesus (Luke 1:35), are conceived in sin (see Genesis 3 and Romans 5:12-18).

Romans 3:23 tells us that everyone has sinned and missed the mark of God’s glory. All of us have sinned. We have all sinned in our father Adam. We all have fallen short of the target of God’s glory. We are sinners by nature. We are all characterized by sin. Romans 1:18-3:20 makes very clear that all of mankind is condemned, deserves God’s judgement, and is helpless to remedy this problem.

Interestingly enough, we are not only helpless to fix the problem of sin, but we genuinely do not want to fix the problem. We are gladly heading straight to hell, rebelling against God, and we are shaking our proverbial fist at Him on our way. Carefully read Romans 1:18-32 if you doubt this. Honesty with the biblical text requires this interpretation.

Just when you think that things couldn’t get any worse, read Ephesians 2:1. We are not just blind, trapped, and indifferent, we are DEAD. That’s right. We are dead. We may be in great physical health and have decades of physical life left, but we are dead in our trespasses and sins. We are separated from God because of our sin. We are separated and lifeless. We do not have the capacity to save ourselves. We are spiritual corpses. Even if we could see our sinfulness, we are completely incapable and indifferent of rescuing ourselves. We are in the morgue of sin. There is no response, no hope, no life.

So, by identification with our father Adam, we are all citizens of the domain of darkness from conception. We are trapped. We are blind. We are happily heading to our destruction. We are following and worshiping Satan. We are dead, lifeless, and hopelessly separated from God. We are corpses floating down the rushing river of this world system, heading straight toward the Falls of Eternal Destruction of Hell. We can’t even look for rescue. What can dead men do? Absolutely nothing!

Which Kingdom?

Colossians 1:13-14 tells us that there is the domain of darkness and the kingdom of the Beloved Son. That’s it. Only two kingdoms. No middle ground. To which kingdom do you belong?

The domain of darkness is where we all begin. If you have never turned to Jesus Christ to rescue you from sin, you are trapped in the domain of darkness. Satan is your god and master. Forget any notion that you are the master of yourself. You are serving the god of this world and the end of this is eternal destruction. Your only hope is Jesus Christ.

Here is the Good News: God the Son has become human, not ceasing to be God. He lived the perfect life you should live and cannot. He died the death sinners deserve to die for sins. This is how God has most clearly displayed His love. He has demonstrated His love by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for sinners. The righteous One has died for the unrighteous many to bring us to God (John 3:16; Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 3:18; 1 John 4:7-11). Jesus has come back to life again. Turn to Him and be saved. Trust in Him alone to rescue you from sin. If you turn to Him, His righteousness will be credited to you and your sin will be forgiven. He is willing to save all who will come to Him. Jesus has said, “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out” (John 6:37).

If you are trusting in Jesus Christ, you were once trapped in this domain of darkness. You were once dead in trespasses and sins. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved!” (Ephesians 2:4-5). Give thanks to the Lord for His grace. Reach out to those lost in the domain of darkness with the truth of the Good News. The need is pressing and urgent. People need the Lord Jesus. Without Him they will be forever lost. As recipients of God’s kindness, how can we not reach out to others with His kindness in the Good News.

There are only two kingdoms. No middle ground. To which kingdom do you belong?

In a future post we will examine the Kingdom of the Beloved Son.
