There Is One God and Father of All (Ephesians 4:6)

We have seen six things that unite the church of Jesus Christ. There is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. In this final post on Ephesians 4:4-6 we will see there is one God and Father of all.

Let’s keep this in context. The “all” here is not speaking of every human being without exception. We are not all God’s children. We are not all brothers and sisters based on our humanity. There is no universal Fatherhood of God and brotherhood of man. God is exclusively the Father of those who are in Christ. The “all” is referring to all who are in Jesus.

God the Father is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God (Ephesians 1:3). He is also the Father of all who are in Christ (John 1:12). God is the Father from whom the whole family of believers in heaven and on earth is named (Ephesians 3:14-15). All who are in Jesus have God the Father as their Father. Only those who are in Christ have God the Father as their Father. He is the one God and Father of all true believers in Jesus.

God the Father has predestined believers in Jesus to be adopted as His sons for Himself (Ephesians 1:5). He has brought far off Gentiles near to Himself through the blood of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:13). Believers in Christ are no longer strangers and aliens but members of God’s household (Ephesians 2:19). Again, all who are in Jesus have God the Father as their Father. Only those who are in Christ have God the Father as their Father.

Do you know God as your Father? Consider John 1:12 – “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…” We are brought into the family of God through embracing Jesus Christ. We receive Him by trusting in Him. He has died in the place of sinners, facing all of God’s wrath for our sin. He has come back to life again! Trust in Him today!

There is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. These seven glorious truths are the basis of the unity that the Spirit has produced. Our unity is not based in our preferences or in temporal things. Our unity is based in deep doctrine.

Believer in Jesus, are you being diligent to guard this unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace?

Thankful to be God’s child in Jesus,

Bill Whittington
